The Muchimba people are a semi-nomadic people living mainly in Angola’s border area with Namibia, on the dry Kaokoveld Plateau in the Cunene region. The Cunene river is an important resource in Muchimba daily life, much of which revolves around their cattle and goats. Rather than using water to clean themselves in this dry region, women cover their skin and hair in a mixture of butterfat and ochre pigment known as otjize. As well as keeping them clean, this sometimes perfumed substance protects them from the sun.
