Historically, the Maasai’s entire way of life has depended on their cattle, although more recently they have developed new ways of sustaining themselves. For example, livestock products are sold in order to purchase beads, clothing and grains, or to pay for the children’s school fees. With their cattle dwindling and the loss of grazing territory, the Maasai have grown dependent on foods such as sorghum, rice, potatoes and cabbage – known to the Maasai as goat leaves.
