A distinctive aspect of the Gerewol festival is the way the men show the whiteness of their eyes and teeth to display their strength and good health. The chant they make by vibrating their lips is inspired by the egret, a bird the Wodaabe associate with charisma and eloquence. Until recently, the only annual contact between the remote groups was the Gerewol. Every year these groups would reconnect and discuss crops, livestock, weather and expectations for the year to come.
