Bhutan is known in Bhutanese as Druk Yul, or Thunder Dragon. The population of around 800,000 is made up of several ethnic groups, including the Ngalop and the Sharchop. Sharchop people speak Tshangla, a language that is closely related to Tibetan. Traditionally, it is only a spoken language, so when it needs to be written down, Tibetan script is used.
