The population of around 800,000 is made up of several ethnic groups, including the Ngalop and the Sharchop. Ngalop means ‘the f irst risen’ and this group is the largest in the country. They live mostly in the north-western part of Bhutan. They are known as the people who brought Tibetan Buddhism to Bhutan when they migrated there in the ninth century. Buddhism has been by far the most important religion here ever since. The Ngalop community also adheres to a refined traditional system of etiquette, the Driglam Namzha, which prescribes how to behave and when to wear the traditional Bhutanese attire.
