This valley, spanning more than a hundred kilometres, is also well known for its agricultural terraces, which the Incas built so they could grow crops, especially corn, on the steep mountain slopes. Choclo, the type of corn grown here, was seen as a status good and is still used to make a type of corn beer called chicha, which is drunk at various celebrations. Dotted around the sacred valley are chichería drinking places, which are clearly identified by a red decoration outside to indicate that they have chicha.
