It is said that apu fertility goddess Pachamama, or World Mother, gave the alpaca to the Incas to keep them warm in the mountain cold, and the Quechua have been herding alpacas in the high Andes for many centuries. Q’eros perform ceremonies to pray for the fertility and good health of their animals, using coca leaves and necklaces of fruit in their worship of the mountain spirits. The wool of the alpaca is used to make yarn from which almost every Quechua group weaves their traditional fabric. Alpaca dung is used as fuel for cooking fires and as an agricultural fertilizer.
