For me, it all started with a camera called the Zenit B, a Russian model. I received it from my father when I was 17. This camera wasn’t just any camera; it had a history. My father, a geologist, had used it for 10 years during his expeditions in the Antarctic. Imagine the stories and scenes it had already captured before it even came into my hands.
With the Zenit B in tow, I set off on my own adventures, often running away across the wilds of Tibet. At that time, I really didn’t know where I was going or what I was doing, but I had my camera and four rolls of analog film with me. Those early days were filled with uncertainty and excitement.
When I returned from Tibet, I came back with no more than four or five sharp images, but they were good enough to be published. Seeing those images in print was a turning point for me. It wasn’t just about capturing moments anymore; it was about sharing those moments with the world.
And that’s what began this journey—this incredible love affair with photography that continues to this day. My experiences with the Zenit B taught me the value of patience, the thrill of exploration, and the joy of seeing the world through a lens.
So, whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been on this path for a while, remember that every journey begins somewhere. Mine began with a Russian camera and a youthful spirit of adventure. And it’s a journey I’m still on today, filled with the same passion and love for photography.
